Coloured blind rivets as a functional design solution

Blind rivets have been a proven fastening solution in industrial manufacturing and craftsmanship for decades. They impress with their high strength, ease of processing and ability to permanently join components. However, technical functionality is not the only priority in every application. In areas such as façade construction, aluminium or steel structures for carports, the manufacture of containers and gates, or in design projects, appearance is also crucial. This is where coloured blind rivets come into play: they not only connect components securely, but also ensure a harmonious, attractive appearance. They thus meet the increasing demands on design and function in equal measure.

What are coloured blind rivets and what are they used for?

Coloured blind rivets are rivets that have a special colour coating and can therefore be colour-matched to the components to be joined. Technically, they function like conventional blind rivets: they consist of a mandrel and a blind rivet, which is deformed during the setting process to create a secure connection. The special feature is that, unlike a screw connection, the rivet connection cannot be loosened after setting. Blind rivets are generally silver-grey or copper-coloured, depending on the material selected. An additional coloured coating allows the rivets to be integrated into the overall design of an application in a visually unobtrusive or deliberately accentuated manner.

These coloured blind rivets are mainly used where both functional and aesthetic requirements exist. In aluminium or steel facades, for example, they ensure a consistent colour scheme without unsightly silver dots. In fence construction or balcony systems, they ensure that the connecting elements match the colour of the profiles or sheets, creating a harmonious overall appearance. They are also used in areas such as metal construction, furniture manufacturing and transport containers to create connections that not only hold but also look good.

What colours are available for blind rivets?

GESIPA® offers coloured blind rivets in 15 standard RAL colours that cover the most common requirements in industry and construction. These include classics such as signal white (RAL 9003), black (RAL 9005) and iron grey (RAL 7011). More striking colours such as fire red (RAL 3000) and gentian blue (RAL 5010) are also available in the standard range of GESIPA® coloured rivets.

The standard colour palette allows the rivets to be matched to the most commonly used component colours. For projects with special colour schemes, it is possible to discuss individual solutions and produce blind rivets in other RAL colours. This flexibility is particularly interesting for architects, planners and designers who attach great importance to consistent colour design.

Painted vs. anodised variants: the differences

At GESIPA®, coloured blind rivets made of aluminium/stainless steel are offered in a painted finish as standard. Anodised blind rivets are available on request. Not sure what the difference is? Below, we briefly discuss the two variants and explain which colour treatment is suitable for which application:

Painted blind rivets:

The painted rivets are produced using a wet paint drum process. This involves applying a robust coat of paint evenly to the rivet body, which not only gives it the desired appearance but also provides additional corrosion protection. This variant is ideal for outdoor applications where rivets are exposed to the weather, such as facades, fences or balcony cladding.

Anodised blind rivets:

Anodised blind rivets, on the other hand, are made of aluminium and finished using an electrochemical process. The surface is not coated, but hardened and coloured by anodising. This variant impresses with its high scratch resistance and a particularly elegant, metallic appearance. It is mainly used in high-quality facade construction or in applications with the highest aesthetic requireme

The choice between painted and anodised depends on the specific requirements of the project. While painted blind rivets score points for their wide range of colours and weather resistance, anodised variants offer special advantages when combined with anodised aluminium profiles.

Advantages of coloured blind rivets

Coloured blind rivets offer a number of advantages that make them the preferred choice in many areas:

  • They enable colour-coordinated connections between components, ensuring a uniform appearance.
  • The colour coating acts as an additional protective layer against corrosion and extends the service life of the connection.
  • Thanks to the robust colouring, the rivets remain attractive for a long time, even under heavy use and weather conditions.
  • Available as standard in an aluminium/stainless steel combination and on request in steel or aluminium, coloured blind rivets are extremely versatile.
  • They enhance the end product, as there are no visible connection points or, if desired, these can be colour-coordinated.

Coloured blind rivets make an important contribution to the quality and durability of the construction, particularly in the building sector, where facades, for example, have to meet high visual and functional requirements.

Areas of application

Coloured blind rivets have a wide range of applications. In facade construction, they ensure a seamless connection between panels and profiles without disturbing the appearance. They are also used in metal construction, for example in the manufacture of gates, doors and roofing, and in the industrial production of housings, containers and furniture. Coloured blind rivets are the ideal solution wherever a durable, weather-resistant connection is required and a harmonious appearance is important.

FAQs – Further questions about coloured blind rivets

Are coloured blind rivets also available in small quantities?

GESIPA® offers coloured blind rivets in packaging units of 250, 500 or 1,000 pieces. The exact package size depends on the respective rivet diameter and design. Please contact us directly for individual quantity requests for special projects.

How long does the colour last on coloured blind rivets when used outdoors?

Thanks to the wet paint drum process and the high-quality colour coating, the rivets are optimally protected against weather influences. When used properly and under normal conditions, the colour remains stable for many years.

Are coloured blind rivet nuts also available?

GESIPA® does not currently offer coloured blind rivet nuts. Our range of coloured fasteners focuses on blind rivets. Our painted rivets are available as standard for colour-matched rivet connections.

Excursus: How to use coloured blind rivets correctly

When setting coloured blind rivets, particular care should be taken not to damage the surface and to leave the colour coating intact. We recommend using original GESIPA® rivet tools, which are precisely tailored to the requirements of our rivets.

The coloured GESIPA® blind rivets are equipped with the dome head, which is the most commonly used head in riveting technology. This provides a large contact surface on the material, ensuring good hold and preventing excessive stress on the material. The coloured blind rivets also come from the popular PolyGrip® series, which offers the advantage of a large grip range that can replace up to five standard rivets.

Conclusion: Coloured blind rivets add value to your next project

Coloured blind rivets from GESIPA® are much more than just fasteners – they are a design element for high-quality, durable and visually appealing connections. With variants made of aluminium-stainless steel combinations, aluminium or steel as required, in standard colours such as black, iron grey and many other RAL colours, individual projects can be perfectly realised. Coloured blind rivets have even been used as a stylistic element in works of art. Our experts are on hand to develop tailor-made solutions for special requirements.
